Reduce wrist strain at your computer

I am impressed with my WACOM Bamboo tablet (pen and touch) . If like me, you spend too many hours at your computer using a mouse you might like to try a graphics tablet. You can do all the things you normally do with a mouse but without the wrist and hand strain and once you get the hang of using your fingers and a stylus its much quicker.

I use Windows 7 on a desk PC and this tablet works well for browsing, I can use finger taps and two finger spreads to quickly zoom in or out of web pages, scroll with a finger drag and even rotate (not something I want to do very often) and you can set short cut buttons to customise your options. Something I particularly like is that you can sit back in your chair and use the tablet on a clipboard at a comfortable angle so you don’t have to lean forward, that takes a lot of pressure off your neck and shoulders.

The tablet has a USB connector so I can plug it in to my PC and it works alongside my keyboard and mouse so I have a versatile set-up that lets me work for longer with less strain (I suppose thats a good thing).

School lightens the load

Clearwater high school in Kansas has decided to replace all essential text books with electronic versions. Each of the 2000 children have received Kindle Readers with their course books already downloaded. So instead of lugging up to six heavy textbooks around with them there is only one thing to carry. The Kindle has a built in dictionary and a text to voice converter which means that even when lying horizontal youngsters can still study. So hopefully a reduction in twisted spines, stiff necks and eyestrain.

The Kindle has proved to be a huge success with the school and the pupils. The school will spend less because ebooks don’t wear out and the students are delighted with the technology.

Even for those of us no longer at school this could be one way of cutting down the weight of your holiday reading list.

Missed Opportunity

I wish I had bought shares in Eurotunnel 2 weeks ago. If this Icelandic volcano keeps going for another year or two they will pay of their debts and might even show a profit. In the meantime I wonder if someone can combine Dyson technology with aircraft engines and make a plane that can fly through duststorms. I’m just off to patent the idea…
